Introduction

What Was SRB6?
A seven year regeneration programme that worked in specific areas of Oldham, at the forefront of helping new businesses to start, creating jobs, improving health, raising educational achievement, reducing crime and making physical improvements to buildings and the environment.

SRB6 stands for Single Regeneration Budget. There have been 5 previous rounds; this was the 6th.

What Did It Do?

SRB6 funding was given by Central Government to needy areas to help make them better places in which to live, work and enjoy free time. The funds are divided into seven themes.

Where Was The Money For?

The scheme made lasting improvements to the areas in the bid.

The bid covered Hollinwood, Coppice, Freehold and parts of South Chadderton.

The new M60 motorway lies close to the south-west boundary of the bid area; the main Oldham to Manchester Road (A62) runs through the middle of the area; and the railway line, which will become the route of the new Metrolink (tram) forms most of the north and north west boundary.

How much Did SRB6 Get?

Approximately £20 million has be spent between January 2001 and March 2007.

How was The Community Been Involved?

Local communities were consulted throughout the bid development process, and there was a strong commitment throughout the Scheme to continuing and developing this involvement as the Scheme progressed.

Did Anyone Check On How The Money Is Spent?

Yes. The Government gave the responsibility of running the SRB to the North West Development Agency (NWDA). We had to provide regular reports and information to the NWDA, which monitored our progress. We agreed an Annual Delivery Plan with the NWDA, and agreed any changes to what we have said we will do in advance. We also had an NWDA Link Officer, who met regularly with the Co-ordination Team. Should it have been that the scheme was not performing, and/or there were other problems the NWDA think had not been solved, then the scheme would have had to give the money back!

How was the money spent?

The scheme worked across 7 themes. The Themes were:

1. Business Support and Job Creation
2. Environment, Infrastructure and Image
3. Improving Health
4. Lifelong Learning
5. Reducing Crime
6. Sustainable Neighbourhoods
7. Young People
