Hollinwood BMX, Skate and Basketball facility Development of facility comprising of a BMX/Skate Park, basketball half-court, solar powered teen shelter and a variety of improvements to footpaths and landscaping. Congratulations to all the young people, residents and community activists who lobbied to get SRB6 Board support for this project, which was officially opened on 11 April 2007. The development of the facility was the result of an extensive youth consultation conducted by Upturn on behalf of the Oldham SRB6 Scheme. The consultation engaged with young people at a Youth Day, in local schools and in community centres. However the vast majority of responses were obtained from outreach surveys to consult young people who were not currently using existing youth provisions. The results of the survey showed that the majority of young people believed there to be a lack of local, good quality, free-of-charge sports facilities in the area. The survey also showed that many young people were currently involved or would like to become more involved in BMX-ing, skateboarding, skating and basketball. The project had support from the Hollinwood Community Panel and SRB Board. Following consultation with residents in the surrounding area of the proposed development, the vast majority expressed strong support for the facility. Young people were encouraged to partner in designing and developing the park, learn and gain an insight into the processes involved in scheme design, budget management, site preparation, health and safety, and planning an opening event. The Launch Event The facility was officially opened by Mayor of Oldham, Bernard Judge. A spectacular skate and BMX display followed from the world-class extreme sports entertainers, 'Team Extreme'. Team Extreme also offered free training sessions to local BMXers and boarders.
